Thai Society of Toxicology (TST)

Bio: Prof. Dr. Songsak Srianujata has got Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical chemistry degree from University of Kansas, U.S.A. and certificate in risk assessment from IUTOX, RASS. Dr. Songsak has been working mostly in the area food and in nutrition, particularly in area of food safety and risk assessment. He also established Thailand Risk Assessment Center, under Nutrition Foundation (NF) which presently he id the chairman of NF. He was the faculty member of Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, and teaching and doing research in food safety. Dr. Songsak has served as members and chairs of various committees and sub-committees in many ministries, particularly at Thai FDA, Agricultural and Food Standard Bureau, and Ministry of Industry (in area of hazardous substances). He has served as Presidents, of the Pharmaceutical Association of Thailand (PAT), under Royal patronage, Thai Society of Toxicology (TST) up to now, and Council of Scientific and Technological Associations of Thailand (COSTAT). Dr. Songsak has more than 86 publications.

 

Abstract: After the approval of the Cabinet of Thailand approved the strategic flamework of the Food Committee (2010) according to the establishment of the Food Committee Act the sub-committee on risk assessment was established. The sub-committee proposed to establish the Thailand Risk Assessment Center TRAC) under the Nutrition Foundation (in 2014) based at the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol university, to be one of the centers responsible for Risk and safety assessment concerning food. It aims to do risk and safety assessment of chemicals in food as, food additives, contaminants, microbial safety, GMO food, novel food, nutrients, plastic food package, and others. The assessment is followed the guidelines established by international agencies, such as Codex, USFDA, EFSA of EU and others. The process of risk assessment is briefly by accepting the request by government and private organization including private companies. After accepting the request, the technical staffs of TRAC will consider the dossier weather it contains enough data and information for further process or need more data and information. If it is sufficient the primary report will be made and forward to expert panel consisting of at least 3 experts from our roster to consider and made comment. After that the draft report and comments will be submitted to the committee composed of expert panel members and experts of TRAC to consider and to make consensus decision on the final report to be submitted to the agency request. The detail of the establishment, vision, mission, flamework, the organization, and the risk assessment process, will be presented in detail and discussed. The other safety assessment organization that is recognized by Thai FDA as well will also be mentioned.
