China national center for food safety risk assessment

Bio: Sui Haixia, PhD, Researcher, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment. She is an expert of the FAO microplastic food safety technology insights working group, expert of the international liaison group on methods for risk assessment of chemicals in food (ILMERAC), member of the China national food safety risk assessment expert committee, member of the national food safety standards review committee, and member of committee of toxicity testing and alternatives, Chinese environmental mutagen society (CEMS). Dr. Sui has been engaged in the research and development of food chemical risk assessment technology and the study of food toxicology mechanisms for about 20 years. She presided over the establishment of multiple national food safety risk assessment guidance documents, including TTC, QSAR, and read-across. Recently, she is responsible for organizing the development of new approach methodologies for next generation risk assessment in China. Dr. Sui has published more than 20 English articles as first author and corresponding author in internationally renowned academic journals. She is the chief editor/translator of four monographs and has participated in the writing of two English monographs on nutritional toxicology, toxicology and risk assessment. She has won 6 Science and Technology Progress awards.

Abstract: The threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) constitutes a science-based tool for screening risk-based prioritization of chemicals with low exposure. In this presentation, the current status and future perspectives of TTC application in food safety risk assessment in China is introduced. There is a guideline on the application of TTC in food safety risk assessment in China so as to harmonize the application of TTC. TTC is used as a screening tool for risk assessment of contaminants, unknown migrates from recycled PET products based on mechanical process, as well as degradation and by products of pesticide active ingredients. Currently, China national food safety standard GB 15193.1 is under revision, TTC is included in the draft revision of standard.
