Bio: Roel Vermeulen is Professor of Environmental Epidemiology and Exposome Science at Utrecht University in the Netherlands and holds an adjunct professor position at UMC Utrecht. Prof. Vermeulen’s scientific research focuses on environmental risk factors for non-communicable diseases, with a strong emphasis on integrating epidemiology, high-quality exposure/exposome assessment and molecular biology into multidisciplinary investigations:
• Identify new risks, clarify exposure-response relationships, and effect modification by individual susceptibility, and elucidate underlying mechanisms of disease
• Implement and evaluate interventions in real-world settings
Abstract: Our environment is rapidly evolving due to urbanization, climate change, and the increased use of synthetic materials, surpassing current research capacities and potentially leading to unrecognized health risks. To address this, we must move beyond the traditional "one exposure, one disease" model and enhance our understanding of modifiable non-genetic risk factors. This paradigm shift requires establishing a reference human exposome, building a FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) exposome data ecosystem, leveraging AI and advanced analytics, integrating exposomic knowledge into public health and clinical practice, fostering public-private innovation, expanding exposomics training, and initiating a global human exposome initiative. In this presentation, I will discuss how current European projects utilize exposomics to design healthier cities, assess industrial risks, and ensure that innovations in chemicals, energy, and urban planning are aligned with human health. These projects leverage recent advances in artificial intelligence, high-resolution chemical monitoring, wearable devices, geospatial data, and digital health technologies, enabling large-scale exposomics research.
