She was the Deputy Director General and Chief Scientist for Guangdong CDC, the former Dean of School of Public Health and Director of Food Safety and Health Research Center of SMU, the former vice chair of Chinese Society of Toxicology (CSOT). She has been a WHO toxicological expert and temporary adviser of JECFA. She is currently a member of National Expert Committee for Food Safety Risk Assessment, and one of vice leaders on Toxicological Evaluation Procedures Panel of National Expert Committee for Food Safety Standards. In addition, she also serves as the deputy chairperson of the Sub-technical Committee for Safety Evaluation of the Cosmetics Standardization Technical Committee of NMPA and Vice Chair in Professional Committees of CSOT, Food Toxicology committee and Alternatives & Translational Toxicology Committee. Recently, Prof Yang is mainly engaged in research of applied toxicology and safety evaluation and risk assessment, especially in Food and Cosmetics. Her recent research interests focus on the toxicological safety evaluation and risk assessment of food contaminants, additives (e.g cadmium, curcumin, gardenia yellow), plant-based food or Cosmetics ingredients by developing and applied NAMs and NGRA.

Abstract: The development of safety assessment in China has evolved significantly over the past decades, driven by rapid industrialization and technological advancements. Initially focused on hazard identification and risk management, the field has expanded to incorporate advanced methodologies, including in vitro test methods, in silico tools, and predictive modeling. However, challenges persist, such as different regulatory enforcements, high demanding for expert judgement, different quality of data sources, etc. In China, risk assessment started from food safety assessment, and now has expanded to multiple categories, such as chemical legislation and cosmetic industry. In the past years, it has been developed a lot per the effort among academia, industry and regulators. However, due to the complexities of risk assessment in practice and inconsistent capability status among different areas, we are still facing a lot of challenges in practice. Based on the emerging new regulations on safety assessment, we do see it’s good opportunity for China to further develop in toxicology. To capitalize on these opportunities, China must strengthen its regulatory frameworks, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and invest in workforce training.
