Bio: Dr. Vanitha Thurairasu is a Public Health Medical Officer with extensive expertise in public health, toxicology, and environmental risk assessment. She has contributed to numerous research initiatives focusing on occupational exposure to hazardous substances, heavy metal contamination, and public health policies. Her work encompasses cross-sector collaborations between academia, government, and industry to drive improvements in environmental health standards and safety regulations. With a strong background in toxicology, she actively participates in international conferences, policy discussions, and scientific forums, advocating for evidence-based approaches in occupational health and environmental toxicology.

Abstract: This session will explore the intricate and wide-ranging impacts of heavy metal contamination on ecological systems and human health. It will delve into how industrial processes and human activities contribute to the release of heavy metals, leading to the contamination of soil, water, and air. The discussion will cover bioaccumulation and biomagnification pathways, highlighting their effects on biodiversity loss, ecosystem disruptions, and habitat degradation. This session will further examine the human health consequences of exposure, including acute poisoning, chronic diseases, and the compounded risks faced by vulnerable communities and occupational groups. Real-world case studies and evidence-based findings will illustrate the interconnectedness between environmental health and human well-being. The session will also emphasize sustainable interventions, preventive strategies, and effective regulatory frameworks needed to mitigate contamination risks and protect both ecosystems and public health.
