Abstract: Thai FDA responsible for protecting health through the control and supervision of health products including food safety by enforcement of the Food Act B.E. 2522. To ensure the safe use of plastic food packages, Thai FDA established regulation on plastic food packaging in 2022 which sets out new standards covers both plastic food packaging made from virgin and recycled materials. This regulation lifted the ban on the use of recycled materials for food packaging. All types of plastic packaging made from pre-consumer scrap or chemical recycled plastic material are allowed. However, for mechanical recycled plastic must be made from PET only and must undergone a process that effectively remove contaminants. Moreover, the final packaging must comply with the standard of packaging made from virgin plastic. Thai FDA have been published the guidance for evaluation of recycling process. The maximum concentration of contaminants at 210 mg/kg was established as criteria for process evaluation according to the consumption factor, thickness and density of PET packaging in Thailand. This were developed under the project in collaboration between Thai FDA and Universities based on the survey for post – consumer misuse and the food contact recycling approach of the US.FDA.
