Bio: Dr. Jian Wang is a Senior Scientist, SM Beamline Responsible at the Canadian Light Source (CLS), and an Adjunct Professor of Chemistry with the University of Saskatchewan. He received B.Sc. in Chemistry from Nanjing Normal University in 1996, M.Sc. in Physical Chemistry from Nanjing University in 1999, and Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from McMaster University, Canada, in 2008. After the postdoctoral work resident in the Advanced Light Source, USA, he joined the CLS in 2009. He was a Research Associate or Acting Beamline Scientist until 2015 when he was promoted to the Beamline Responsible Scientist. Since 2021 he has been a Senior Scientist at the CLS. His research interests include materials analysis (focused on environmental and energy sciences) and instrumentation developments for STXM, Ptychography, and X-PEEM, with 240 peer-reviewed publications.

Abstract: Synchrotron-based scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) seamlessly combines soft X-ray microscopy with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, offering nanoscale, high-resolution chemical imaging and spectroscopy. STXM has been utilized in toxicological applications to provide unparalleled insights into toxicant interactions at the molecular and cellular levels, allowing precise mapping of the distribution and chemical states of toxic elements. Moreover, STXM enables real-time, non-destructive analysis, making it indispensable for studying complex biogeochemical systems exposed to environmental and industrial toxicants. This presentation will discuss selected applications of STXM in toxicology, including immobilization and transformation mechanisms, as well as speciation and quantitation of chemical species of chromium, [1, 2] arsenic, [3] and selenium. [4] The employment of STXM in toxicological applications helps unravel mechanisms of toxicity, bioaccumulation, and detoxification, offering critical information for risk assessment and therapeutic strategies.
